Future Food: Zucchini or Courgette

Whether you call them Zucchini or Courgette, there is no beating growing your own. I prefer the Black Jack variety, they are great tasting, and produce like crazy.

The plant is also very attractive with its exotic patterned leaves, so if you dont like to eat Zukes, you could still grow them as an ornamental...why not?

This flower reminds me of a lily. And it does look like something I'd like to grow as an ornamental. But, I love squash, so I could benefit in more than one way. I don't think I have a good place to grow veggies, though. I do grow tomato plants in pots on my deck, however. Just not sure about the squash. I like the photo, though! Your blog is interesting, too. I like the fact that you 'split' your personalities between 2 blogs! That's really creative, and clever:) Jan/ThanksFor2Day

They're lovely looking plants. The UK commercial crop failed in many places this year because of the lack of bees to pollinate them.

My first plant I grew at 8 was a zuchinni plant and it is what inspired my love of growing a garden. I daydream of growing vegies again. The photo is awesome too by the way

'Yum! would be a lot more appropriate. Had some battered deep fried zucchini flowers at a Dee Why beachside cafe over the weekend... Yum!!

Thanks For 2 Day Thanks, Thanks! :) I actually was wondering if one of these would be happy in a large pot I have - perhaps I should try it and let you know! I think if tomatos can produce for you on the balcony, then you could be very happy with a Zuke as well - Heres hoping your balcony has room for more!!

Barkfoot Its frightening about the bees, and I have heard similar stories from around the world - we had all better learn how to pollinate our own, eh?

Melanie What a cool first plant?! (Mine was a marigold) A seedling black jack zuke is pretty cheap at most garden centers, if you have a pot in a sunny spot somewhere, maybe you could have a go - still plenty of time left this summer! Thank you :)

Young Werther I think they started eating the flowers because if you have several plants, you can actually drown in zukes. LOL Ive never had the flowers - perhaps I should try them sometime, Cheers Mate!

Oh this looks like a star. I knew it was a squash family flower immediately.

Solusiplus Glad you enjoyed it, thank you!

Ces Star shaped = squash? Cool, I will watch for that! Its sort of like 'square stem = mint family' nature never ceases to amaze me!
