3 days old

Today we have feathers beginning to emerge on thier tiny wings. The beaks must have had the day off after the amazing growth spurt we saw yesterday. Im looking forward to seeing what these Little Wattle Bird chicks look like today. Mum is stuck to the nest this morning as a cold front has come thru, (after we were all baked alive yesterday), but at some point I will get a look in with the camera for your report tommorrow. See you then!

My morning routine now includes running over here and looking into their nest ;) The new feathers look amazing Lavender! They ARE amazing!

They look different everyday. The parents must be working like crazy to feed them. Are the changes a result of growing, or do they change shape whether they are growing a lot or not? Oh, that wasn't very clear was it? I'm not sure you will understand my question...sorry. It's late and I've seem to have lost the ability to.....now I can't remember that word either!!!! I'm off to bed.

This is so amazing! They look like rudimentary wings. I feel their eyes are so delicate. They look so helpless.

They sure ARE growing, and the feathers popping out on those wings are incredible. Like Ces said - they look so fragile - I was thinking just how vulnerable they would be if some type of predator managed to get too close.
What kind of animal would raid that kind of nest? Just curious.

Anon Its almost like throwing a switch - and BOOM - theyre growing Tehehe I bet those feathers poking thru are uncomfortable, all the budgies sulk when they moult - surely getting your first full coat has got to be worse!! :)

Barkfoot LOL Hope you got some rest Mate! Yes, the parents are working like crazy and the food just keeps coming - Not alot of insects left in my gardens! :)
If I understood your question...they are changing because they are growing. If the parents werent getting them enough to eat, then the changes would be much much slower, if they happened at all - lets hope my neighbors have bugs left in thier gardens!

Ces You know, I worry about thier eyes, all those sharp stick ends! Tehehe I just keep telling myself the birds have been doing this for eons, I shouldnt worry....but they so look so delicate, sweet little dears!

BetteJo Yeah, thats a worry, There are predators about! So far I havent seen the neighbors cat lately, so thats good...but there are still the Butcherbirds and Currawongs, even the Magpies could take these as a snack if they discovered them. Then theres always things like mice or rats - they take thier share....at least I dont have to worry about snakes or big lizards like goannas - so theres some relief!
Mum and Dad are very careful to check the surrounds before they go to the nest, that way theres less chance they will be followed - very very clever birds! But best to keep our fingers crossed that no baddies find them...Shhhh! Its a secret :)
